Amazon is eliminating a pocket-sized number of function in its Communications and Sustainability departments , grant to an internal memoranda consider by TechCrunch .

Per the memo , these cuts appear tie in to Amazon ’s controversial reappearance to office policy . In September , Amazon CEO Andy Jassynotifiedemployees that they would be expected toreturn to the officefive day per week beginning in 2025 , but the decision sparkedblowbackfrom employees .

“ We identify some roles that were too narrowly scoped or that introduced unneeded layers , where we could n’t solve the challenge by flattening the structure or shifting workload , ” write SVP Drew Herdener in the memo learn by TechCrunch . “ To treat this and do the right-hand thing for the patronage , we ’re eliminating a little number of roles in Communications and Sustainability . ”

Herdener cite a late meeting with Jassy , where the CEO aver that reducing company headcount was not a end of reorganizing the workforce ; Herdener claim that the overall headcount of his section will stay unchanged once Amazon rehires for some of these roles at low levels .

When reached by TechCrunch , Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser declined to separate TechCrunch how many job were eliminated . The laid off employees will incur “ financial support , benefit continuation , and job position assistance , ” per the memorandum .

These cut in sustainability and embodied responsibility office come less than two calendar week after President Donald Trump was inaugurate . Amazon founder Jeff Bezos had aclose - up seatat the inauguration , sitting close behind Trump and alongside other technical school billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg , Elon Musk , and Sergey Brin .
