Amazon ’s new thin client expect just like a Fire TV Cube … and that ’s by design . At its AWS re : Ignite league , the troupe this morning announced the launch of new $ 195 gadget that allow enterprise users to access practical screen background environments , like Amazon WorkSpaces , over the internet . The devices are domiciliate in Fire TV Cube hardware — a determination Amazon made to leverage be expertise from the arm of the retail giant that make streaming media player .
The ship’s company explained its decision to build up new hardware came from customer feedback about want to lower IT spend by substitute desktops and laptops with less expensive hardware . Today , many of Amazon ’s enterprise customers log on to virtual desktop free-base on AWS End User Computing Services , like Amazon WorkSpaces , WorkSpaces Web or Amazon AppStream , but they tend to do so over background or laptops that cost their employer $ 600 to $ 1,200 each , Amazon says .
The new thin guest will dramatically undersell that pricing , though they will not have all the capabilities of a dedicated PC . Still , the idea was to offer customer a way to be up and running with new end - user hardware more quickly and at a more cost - efficacious monetary value level . And when it came time to design the ironware , Amazon decided not to reinvent the bicycle .
“ We have an entire air division in our company that makes devices already , ” said Melissa Stein , director of product for End User Computing at AWS , who supervise the Amazon WorkSpaces Thin Client labor , in anannouncementabout the new applied science . “ combine the expertness from the Amazon Devices mathematical group with logistics from Amazon Business and the power of the AWS Cloud is a hard compounding for customers , ” she added .
Though Stein ’s squad built a new software stack for the equipment , they did n’t have to build up the young hardware , which allowed them to keep price down .
The resulting sparse node offers low - toll computing by unload much of its processing index to the cloud , specifically the AWS Cloud . That intend the twist itself does not store data point and only hunt approved software deployed by IT , for contribute security . If a machine is recede or stolen , troupe information remains secure in the cloud .
But unlike the Fire TV Cube , where consumer would link their amusement devices , like a TV , the thin guest ’s USB and HDMI port support the connection of peripherals like dual monitors , a computer mouse , a keyboard , a camera , a headset and more . Inside , the squad build unexampled microcode and software , including an operating organization for employee to get at their company ’s cloud applications .

IT department can also superintend the devices remotely , allowing them to support customer or update the gimmick for a fresh employee . They can enter the AWS Management Console to see on thing — like which gadget are alive , and what software adaptation a gimmick is running . Or , they can remotely readjust a twist or associate it with a new visibility . Plus , administrators can configure groups of devices with their own insurance policy , permissions and access code restraint , to salvage time .
The thin clients also support on - twist authentication and integrating with Amazon ’s virtual desktop inspection and repair , include WorkSpaces for lasting desktops , AppStream for nonpersistent applications and web browser - only access with WorkSpaces Web .
The devices will be sold through Amazon ’s B2B marketplace and can be ordered preconfigured so customers can be up and running in about five minutes , Amazon foretell . That ’s faster than the fourth dimension it takes to configure company laptop or computers , which can often take hours or days of IT ’s clip , it says .
