Awkward branding aside, the $179 earbuds should tick most boxes for most people
I ca n’t echo another consumer electronics ware category becoming a commodity as quickly as Bluetooth earbuds . Apple ’s AirPods played a key role in that growth , of course , recapturing a form of excitement not seen in consumer music tech since the original iPod .
AirPods ’ fundamental principle have n’t changed much in the eight class since they debut . The fore are mercifully short , and they ’ve gained some fundamental features , but these have mostly been refinements to a product that come in the world fully formed .
Until last week , their ascent cycle was straightforward : Apple introduce a new feature for its pricey eminent - end fashion model , which permeate down to the theme level after a class or two . At last Monday’siPhone 16 event , however , things pose more complicated , as the theme AirPods fork into two distinguishable products : AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation .
Here ’s what the line looks like :
I see a good deal of previous - night session among Apple ’s handsomely paid branding team , attempting to determine what to call the new level . I can practically guarantee someone fling out “ AirPods 4.5 ” in a bid to leave the office before sunrise . Ultimately , however , they landed somewhere far more unwieldy . But hey , at least it does what it enounce on the box .
AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation ( refer to henceforth as “ AP4wANC ” ) live in a variety of liminal place . Had AirPods 4 go far last class , perhaps Apple would have take for these AirPods 5 . As it stands , however , they ’re smack in the middle of the in - auricle AirPods railway line .
They look identical to the base model , featuring the same redesign , with a sleeker square charge case and a more ergonomic design . Apple says they scan thousands of ears to produce 50 million data points . The results are smaller and more tapered than their predecessor . The AP4wANC also acquire some of the Pros ’ best characteristic , including wireless charging , a speaker for FindMy and the titular ANC .

There are two clear reasons why someone would choose the AP4wANC over AirPods Pro 2 . The first is the $ 50 toll difference . The 2d is a penchant for the severely - edged , open purpose over the Pro ’s swappable silicone tips . The former is self - explanatory , while the latter is extremely subjective . I , for one , ca n’t hold back to return to the warm embracing of the Pros ’ crest .
I realise , however , that some the great unwashed are deeply uncomfortable insert anything into their ears , including a millimeter or two of silicone polymer . If that ’s you , get the AP4wANC and save some John Cash in the process . For my money , however , the comfort and peaceful interference canceling you get with the Pros for the most part justifies the monetary value gulf .
When the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancelling bump off the level last calendar week , many — ourselves included — enquire how the party would maintain day between them and the Pro models beyond just the tips . After all , every model , salve for the USB - C AirPods Max , are run off the same H2 cow chip . There are a few points of difference , admit swipeable bulk controls on the stem , best noise cancellation and a touch more battery .
While AirPods Pro 3 are rumor to be arriving sooner than by and by , however , the distance between the models is n’t immense , but for one surprisal . Last week , the FDA give the green light to a new software feature that let the premium model double asover - the - replication hearing aids . It ’s difficult to say how expectant the specific audience for that feature will ultimately be , but it regain Apple charting a fascinating future for the railway line .
At the moment , only the AirPods Pro 2 support the feature film . This is for two key reasons . First is the inactive noising - offset properties of the silicone polymer tips , which are key to taking Io 18 ’s new hearing test . That rules out the standard AirPods 4 . The second is that the H2 chip is involve , which makes the original AirPods Pro a non - starter .
I wore the AP4wANC for much of my misstep home from the result last week . The ANC was enough to drown out plane randomness . On the subsequent gearing drive , however , a woman speaking loudly on her phone a few rows away made me prospicient for the AirPods Pro noise seal . As far as comfort go , I had no issue with the AP4wANC , where as other open - auricle design models have given me worry .
The sound is excellent , though you do fall back the full exposure of the music without a Navy SEAL in space . Most hoi polloi wo n’t find this to be a major issue — doubly so if most of your listening involves podcasts and audiobooks .
The amply wireless earbud food market is dramatically different than the one the first AirPods entered in September 2016 . It ’s good to say we ’ve all deepen a quite a little in that time . But the AirPods themselves have n’t changed too dramatically . New feature have get in , but the core is still intact .

They sound great and fit like a boxing glove with the rest of Apple ’s hardware offerings . As for that damage gulf between the AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC , $ 50 go a long way here .
