At itsre : Invent 2024 conferencein Las Vegas , Amazon on Sunday announced a middling strange new service for Amazon Web Services ( AWS ) customers : Data Transfer Terminal , a set of strong-arm locations where customers can plug in their storage devices to upload data to the AWS cloud .
So how does it shape , exactly ? From the AWS management console table , customers can reserve a sentence time slot , optionally assign cognitive process and data transfer specialists from their organization , and visit a Data Transfer Terminal location to upload their datum .
“ On your reserved date and meter , [ you ’ll ] chat the location and confirm access with the building reception , ” Channy Yun , a main developer counselor-at-law at AWS , explained in ablog post . “ [ You ’ll then be ] see by build staff to the floor and your hold way of the Data Transfer Terminal placement [ … ] Do n’t be surprised if there are no AWS signs in the building or room . This is for security measure reasons to keep your piece of work location as private as possible . ”
The initial Data Transfer Terminal fix have been opened in New York City and Los Angeles , and more will be contribute in the time to come . Each location is equip with a patch instrument panel , fiber eye cable , and a PC for monitor datum transferee occupation .
Now , why would someone require to lug all their difficult drives to a building and sit around and expect for the upload to finish ? Well , Amazon claims that Data Transfer Terminal delivers fast upload speeds ( up to 400 Gbps ) via a good , “ high-pitched throughput ” connective .
You ’ll have to pay for the privilege , though . Amazon charges “ per port hour ” for usage of port in Data Transfer Terminal locations during a reservation — even when no information is being transferred .
“ At a minimum , you ’ll be charged per port hour for the number of hours reserved,”readsan Amazon support page . “ You ’ll be charged for port hours for each port you employ and/or request as part of your reservation . ”

Per - port charges are $ 300 for “ U.S. to U.S. ” data transfers ( i.e. uploads to a U.S.-based AWS data center ) and $ 500 for “ U.S. to EU ” conveyance ( uploads to an EU region ) . Amazon does n’t heel the prices for transfer to the rest of the globe .
