Oil and accelerator pedal is n’t the only source of energy lurking under our feet . Drill deep enough and Earth ’s temperature stay coherent enough that it can be a author of heating and cool for homes , offices , and data point shopping center .

But in many regions , geothermal wells today bottom out at around 500 infantry , a limitation that is largely dictated by the kind of drilling equipment that ’s typically used .

“ It ’s pretty shallow , and you ’re going to need two or three times the amount of blank if you only go to those depths , ” Joselyn Lai , Centennial State - founder and CEO ofBedrock Energy , told TechCrunch .

To belittle geothermal ’s footmark , Bedrock practise deeper .

“ In a cooling - prevailing locating , that can very well be 800 to 1,000 infantry , which is three times more infinite effective . And in a heating - prevailing location , that can very well be 1,000 to 1,200 feet or even more , which is two times more outer space effective , ” Lai say .

Because it does n’t take as much land , Bedrockhas been targeting commercial buildingswhere land tends to be at a premium . It completed its first two instalment last twelvemonth , one at an office construction in Austin , Texas , and another at a resort in Utah . For installation like these , Lai say that the company expects to be profitable on a project base in the next year .

Bedrock has also started to explore apply geothermal chilling to datum center . Last fall , the startup partnered with Dominion Energy to read the space .

One of the main challenge is that datum centers are one - way of life exploiter of geothermal push . Since servers generate heat 24/7 , information centers would be dumping heating plant into the ground year - round . Contrast that with other users like place building , which tend to chill in the summer and high temperature in the winter , leading to a more balanced annual energy budget .

Still , it ’s looking promising , Lai said . What ’s underground can make a difference : Fast - flowing earth water , for example , can cool things off more promptly . The boreholes would need to be spread out compared with other installations , raise overall costs . But Bedrock ’s data analytic thinking , developed with experiencegleaned from the oil and gas sector , advise that geothermal would be a good fit for information core , particularly when mate with solar farms , which also demand large tract of country .

“ generally speaking , cooling with geothermal is about twice as effective as cooling with water and air , especially at the hottest times of the day when it ’s very , very humid , which is what happens in a fortune of states that have information centers , ” Lai say .

Geothermal ’s other welfare is how systematically it uses electricity . Because Earth ’s temperature is relatively stable , the heat pumps that channelize energy to or from a geothermal reservoir do n’t have to ramp up or down to compensate for change in air temperature , as zephyr - source heat pumps do . For heavy electrical energy user like office building and data centers , that can be a boon to the bottom line since utility typically bear down heavy users more when their demand empale .

Lai sound out that the outlook for geothermal remains promising enough that the ship’s company continues to adorn in blow up military operation and research and development , focusing on mechanization to speed installing . To sustain that growth , Bedrock recently raised a $ 12 million Series A guide by Titanium Ventures , Energy Impact Partners , and Sustainable Future Ventures with participation from Cantos , Elemental Capital , First Star Ventures , Overture Ventures , Toba Capital , and Wireframe Ventures .
