Two roving operating systems presently constitute intimately 100 % of the global smartphone market . Building one is laborious , and for most earpiece makers , there are right manipulation   of resource , especially when Android is right there for the pickings . While it ’s a potential discriminator , these company have largely opt to maintain Google ’s fluid OS , customized by hide and singular features .

Huawei of late hitch the trend with the release of Harmony OS , though that was a verbatim product of geopolitical restrictions on using American Cartesian product . Despite its massive resources , however , the Formosan electronics giant struggled staggeringly as it scramble to build its own Android choice .

Given its penchant for rock up the market , perhaps it ’s not wholly surprising that London - base Nothing could build its own mobile oxygen from the ground up . At TechCrunch Disrupt 2024 on Wednesday , founder and CEO Carl Pei confirmed that the company is explore what a true Nothing OS could look like .

Pei praise smartphones as “ our most of import gateway to the citizenry we care about and the information we need to consume , ” while criticizing the industry ’s Google / Apple duopoly .

“ We ’re thinking about how we maneuver here , ” he added , “ and perchance make something of our own . Some kind of operating system . ”

The goals of such a move would be to run Nothing ’s shock on the manufacture , while produce an all unexampled revenue stream .

“ Now you could make impact on the software side , ” Pei explain . “ you’re able to change how citizenry use their devices . On the business side , it ’s also very lucrative . In some elbow room , it kind of suck to be a hardware company , because the supply chain , in high spirits capex , blue security deposit , and high risk for production market burst . In a lot of ways , having some computer software revenue is a lot more well-fixed : higher margins . But I think the most important thing is still to satisfy the consumer . ”

The founder say he think the process of construct a mobile OS has become significantly easier , thanks to the late AI boom . Such technology will also go a long way toward offering a degree of customization that has been lacking on be platforms .

“ If you conceive about the technical school stack for what an atomic number 8 is , I do n’t think we need to work on the miserable parts of the wad — driver and how hardware connects to software and the kernel , ” Pei add . “ I do n’t retrieve we need to make for on that , but we should play on innovating the user experience , because operating systems have n’t really changed for 40 year . These computers , smartphones , and these devices have so much information on us . We do so much on them , but they do n’t leverage any of that information to make the experience any better . ”

Asked whether the company was appear to elevate so as to build out such a projection , Pei decline to comment .

“ I do n’t think it needs to be very experient , ” he said . “ This is applied AI , this is not foundational . We ’re not building capabilities ; we ’re not train large language models ; we ’re not build up text to speech or any of that . That ship has sail , and it ’s going to get hyper competitive . Two or three player are going to gain heavy and the relaxation are going to lose money . ”

Pei proceed : “ Irrespective of [ whether ] funding arrive or not , it ’s something we can work on . ”

AI would be an authoritative piece of such an operating arrangement , he explained , but not the be - all and remnant - all .

“ We should n’t call it the AI operating system , ” he said . “ AI is just a tool , and ultimately it comes down to who can make the best merchandise , who can produce the best market conniption , get the highest user atonement . Because in the absence of that , it ’s just not get to make . ”
