A coalition of more than a dozen U.S. states say they are plan to file away a lawsuit in an effort to block billionaire Elon Musk ’s squad of cost - cutter from access raw federal governing defrayal systems contain personal data on Americans .
Ina legal brief statementshared by 13 popular attorneys general , including California , Connecticut , Maine , Maryland , and New York , the coalition said it was planning to file the suit “ in defense force of our Constitution , our right to privateness , and the essential backing that individuals and communities across the country are counting on . ”
The coalition of state did not say when they contrive to file the lawsuit , in which court , or what specific relief the attorneys cosmopolitan were seeking . TechCrunch get through several U.S. commonwealth governments for comment but did not hear back .
The aforethought lawsuit come days after Musk ’s team of mostly untested , private sector associates from his various businessesgained access to top U.S. government departments and datasets , including systems containing the personal information of jillion of Americans who receive Social Security assay , tax return , and other payments from the Union administration . Many of these arrangement were historically limited to a few departmental calling staffers , yield the predisposition of the data .
Musk and his team , known as theDepartment of Government Efficiency , or DOGE , are now in control of the U.S. Treasury , the Department of Education , the Department of Health and Human Services , and several other fundamental federal agency . While the U.S. does not ply countrywide data protections for Americans , U.S. states have long established jurisprudence that involve the protection of their state of matter residents ’ data — including at the Union government level .
