Engineers Adam Keating and Jeremy Andrews were tired of using spreadsheets and screenshots to collab with teammates — so they launch a startup , CoLab , to work up a better way .
The two meet as undergraduate at Memorial University of Newfoundland , where they meditate mechanical engine room together . While they were complete their last internships prior to calibrate ( Andrews at Tesla , Keating at health startup Reflexion Medical ) , they noticed that professional technology teams were relying on clunky tools — namely spreadsheets and PowerPoint deck — to get collaborative piece of work done .
“ We get firsthand the downsides of piecing together critical design reappraisal by beam screenshots of designs back and forth over electronic mail , ” Keating told TechCrunch in an consultation . “ It led to frustratingly farseeing review cycles , interminable admin body of work and issue slue through the sally , despite everyone ’s proficient efforts . ”
Being entrepreneurial types , Keating and Andrewsdecided to get down a company , which they call CoLab , to ramp up the mechanical engineering quislingism suite that they themselves would need to apply . The troupe ’s peter , which Keating says are now being used by teams at Ford , Johnson Controls and Schneider Electric , let engineers review design files , capture and track feedback and document payoff from a single dashboard .
“ Using CoLab , multiple engineers and cross - usable stakeholder can review pattern together and build off one another ’s feedback , ” Keating , now CoLab ’s CEO , say . “ CoLab pulls together design discussions previously lose in e-mail , spreadsheets and notebook computer into a platform that integrate back into enterprise system like product lifecycle management , making it easier for engineers to focus on decision making with the right information available . ”
AI is n’t currently a major part of the CoLab experience , but Keating say it will be in the next few months . CoLab design to expend its growing client data — in an anonymized and privacy - keep up room , Keating pledges — to ramp up AI mannikin that help engineers make “ more informed ” decisions while automatize routine tasks and admin piece of work .

CoLabtoday announced that it raised $ 21 million in a Series B funding round lead by Insight Partners with participation from Y Combinator , Killick Capital and Pelorus VC .
