Big Tech companies are n’t sleeping on quantum chips : Amazon Web Services introducedOcelot ; Microsoft , Majorana ; and Google , Willow . But although all of these can be considered to be breakthrough , quantum startups often focus on more hardheaded advancements — and they are make progress .
Founded in 2020 , Dutch startupQuantWareis one of these , which claims that the hardware it manufactures already power quantum computers for customers in 20 area . Its nucleus offering , VIO , focuses on scaling bottleneck in quantum processing units ( QPUs ) .
Everyone in the quantum computing field is striving for more qubits , the quantum eq of bits — but desegregate more qubits on a individual check is more powerful and less error - prostrate than web several small systems together . QuantWare ’s proprietary 3D microprocessor chip architecture , VIO , “ is the missing data link in scaling up QPUs , ” according to its CEO , Matthijs Rijlaarsdam .
Aspinout of TU Delftand its affiliated research institute , QuTech , QuantWare has now raised a € 20 million Series A ( approximately $ 19.27 million ) — including the € 5 million fairness part of the € 7.5 million itpreviously securedfrom the European Innovation Council after its€6 million seed round(the remaining part is a grant ) .
European funding aside , this all - equity unit of ammunition was co - led by Dutch state - owned entity Invest - NL Deep Tech Fund and regional economical development agency InnovationQuarter , solidify QuantWare ’s placement as a frontrunner inthe Netherlands ’ growing quantum ecosystem .
The new cash in hand will be used to descale QuantWare ’s team and engineering science , which was also recently updated : In February , the inauguration announced it would take preordersfor Contralto - A , its first QPU for quantum erroneousness correction .
While Google ’s Willow processor brought quantum error chastening into the spotlight , QuantWare aim for a roadmap - focused strategy . It ’s designed for upgradability to big VIO - power QPUs , and Contralto - A’sclaim to fameis that it is “ almost twice as large as competing result that are commercially available . ”

Big Tech company , too , are engaged in the race to see who has the largest QPUs with the most qubits . But from the linear perspective of startups that risk of infection not surviving long without tax income , the raceway is also about making quantum ironware commercially approachable to all — rather than subsequently .
On that front , QuantWare is pursue two paths : hand out its own design QPUs , and allowing other companies to utilise its technology via its Foundry and Packaging Services . The raw funding will also be deploy in these two directions — further developing VIO and ramp up out its bit - fabrication facilities .
In addition to research institute , users include several well - fund quantum startups , such as Alice & Bob , which recently raised$104 million . Two of these — Quantum Machines , which raised$170 million last month , andSEEQC , which announced$30 million in unexampled financing in January — are alsoworkingtogether with the Dutch inauguration on the growing of technology and products .
It is too other to tell which of these companies , if any , will come up with a quantum architecture that can provide a million qubits ; Microsoft is in this race , too , andestimatedthat its Majorana promulgation puts that view “ within age , not decades . ”
What ’s at post , Rijlaarsdam told TechCrunch , is the ability for quantum to solve meaningful , industrial - scurf problem .
“ There is a big and worthful stratum of trouble that even a gigawatt AI cluster will not be able-bodied to solve — but quantum computing equipment will , ” he said . “ That is why we are building these arrangement . Some illustration include calculations on quantum systems , such as creating better materials , discovering new catalyst to split up down microplastics , or improving the sustainability of plant food . ”
But for QuantWare , which believes inquantum open computer architecture , the question is not who will build these million qubit systems ; with VIO , it just want to do its part in pushing for it to happen speedily .
