On Sunday , a user in a well - bonk hacking assembly advertize what they claimed was a cache of steal data point from the rental car titan Europcar . The user claimed to have steal the personal information of more than 48 million Europcar client , and said they were “ mind to offer ” to betray the cut data point .

Except , the data seems to be completely made up — perhaps created with ChatGPT , according to Europcar .

– The number of records is completely wrong & discrepant with ours ,

– The sample information is likely ChatGPT - generated ( addresses do n’t survive , ZIP code do n’t match , first name and last name do n’t match email address , email address expend very unusual TLDs ) ,

– And most importantly , none of these electronic mail address are present in our customer database .

The hacking forum user evidence TechCrunch in an on-line chat that “ the information is actual , ” without support that statement with any grounds .

In the forum post , the exploiter claimed the data include usernames , passwords , full names , base addresses , ZIP codes , birthing appointment , recommendation numbers and driver license Book of Numbers , among other datum .

The sample of data posted online , however , does not seem to be legitimate , not only according to Europcar , but also according to Troy Hunt , who escape the data point breach presentment serviceHave I Been Pwned , as well as a TechCrunch psychoanalysis of the data point .

“ Firstly on the genuineness of the data , a crowd of things do n’t add up . The most obvious one is that the email addresses and usernames bear no resemblance to the corresponding people names,”Hunt wrote on X(previously Twitter . )

Hunt also added that many of the alleged home address are false and “ just do n’t exist . ”

The forum user did not respond when asked to explain Hunt ’s observations .

At the same time , Hunt is also skeptical that the data point was created with ChatGPT .

“ We ’ve had fabricated breaches since forever because citizenry want airtime or to make a name for themselves or perchance a quick Pearl Sydenstricker Buck . Who knows , it does n’t matter , because none of that makes it ‘ AI , ’ ” Hunt wrote .

Europcar ’s Vevaud did not immediately answer to questions on how the company determined the datum was generated with ChatGPT .

When TechCrunch ask ChatGPT to make “ a dataset of fake stolen personal data , ” the New World chat bot respond that it could not aid “ in make or promoting any illegal or unethical activities . ”

While it ’s nearly impossible to confidently set up that the fake datum was created with ChatGPT or a alike text - generating AI platform , it is workable that one day cyber-terrorist will employ these putz to create bombastic datasets of fake information .
