Fal.ai , a dev - focused weapons platform for AI - render audio , video , and images , today divulge that it ’s raise $ 23 million in funding from investors include Andreessen Horowitz ( a16z),Black Forest Labsco - beginner Robin Rombach , and Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas .
It ’s a two - round deal : $ 14 million of Fal ’s aggregate come from a Series A tranche lead by Kindred Ventures ; the remain $ 9 million is from a previously unannounced , a16z - take seed round .
Burkay Gur and Gorkem Yurtseven atomic number 27 - launched Fal ( short for “ Features and labels ” ) in 2021 . Yurtseven previously exercise at Amazon as a computer software dev , while Gur , an ex-wife - Oracle technologist , led automobile learning development at Coinbase for several years .
While hack together side projects during the pandemic , Gur and Yurtseven , longtime friends , realise the farm requirement for AI swarm infrastructure — particularly substructure to feed procreative AI poser .
“ The braggy wager was that the nascent space of reproductive media was about to change all media eat up , ” Gur told TechCrunch . “ The timing work out perfectly , because there were some breakthrough models that were released right after Fal begin . ”
Fal offer two mathematical product : in private managed compute and workflows for running models , and genus Apis for open source model that generate persona , audio , and video . Fal was one of the first platforms to host Black Forest Labs ’ Flux , the model powering image generation inGrok , X ’s controversial chatbot .
Many cloud rivals likeCoreWeaveprovide resources along these same lines . But what make Fal different is its scalability , Gur argues .

“ Our platform can deal hundreds of one thousand thousand of request [ and our ] own illation locomotive is the most performant , ” he tell . “ Using Fal , you’re able to integrate models into your applications — the product is for enterprises that have media at the nucleus of what they do . ”
Whether those claims hold up to scrutiny or not , Fal has managed to grow an impressive client roster . In summation to Perplexity ( which explains Srinivas ’ investment funds ) and enterprise customer in the retail and e - commerce sector , popular generative AI apps Photoroom , Freepik , and PlayHT are all paying for Fal ’s service , Gur sound out .
It ’s a profitable bunch . A germ recount TechCrunch that Fal ’s one-year running play rate has climbed to nearly $ 10 million ( ~$800,000 per month ) , up around 10x from January . The Series A valued the startup at $ 80 million .
“ Fal has reached 500,000 developer on the platform , ” Gur say , “ generating 50 million images , video recording , or audio streams a day . ”
give the many deepfake and misinformation hazard around reproductive engineering , I ask Gur if Fal has relief policy or filter in place for sensitive content . He pronounce that Fal prefers to take a helping hand - off approach , pull up stakes the decision whether to implement safety features up to the companies developing models on Fal ’s weapons platform .
“ For moderateness , a lot of what is done happens during preparation , so we leave that to the companies build the models , ” Gur said . “ As you might guess , having a very full-bodied program requires more research and resources . ”
Gur did suggest , however , that Fal is looking to undertake some de - toxifying drive itself … at some point . “ We do have plans to do more of this in - house , and bank on some vendors specialized in this type of oeuvre , ” he said .
I require about IP liability , as well . Should the models on Fal ’s political platform throw up any copyrighted information , will the company protect customers if they ’re sued ? Gur would n’t answer . But the language in Fal’sterms of serviceimply that customers are on their own .
That ’s in line to generative AI products from Adobe , Canva , Google , Microsoft , and Shutterstock , all of which have indemnity article ( albeit withsome carve - out ) . vender like Getty Images , as well as startups such as Fairly Trained , have gone so far as to train model only on “ commercially safe ” subject matter to avoid the terror of right of first publication lawsuits altogether .
That ’s all to say , those who apply Fal assume some risk of infection .
Fal intends to spend the volume of the capital it ’s raised so far on promote its inference optimization product to make it self - serve . The party is also establishing a research team that ’ll focus on model optimisation and will unite Fal ’s 17 - person staff .
Fal ’s other angel let in Vercel beginner Guillermo Rauch , enterpriser and investor Balaji Srinivasan , and Hugging Face CTO Julien Chaumond .
