The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has continued its crackdown on information brokers with a settlement banning data point assembling ship’s company InMarket from selling consumers ’ exact location data point .

In itsproposed orderunveiled Thursday , the FTC accused InMarket of fail to incur user ’ consent before using their location data point for marketing and ad purposes . The FTC lay claim InMarket fail to obtain consent from users of its own apps — shopping list app ListEase andshopping reward app CheckPoints — which the governor said utilisation prompts that contain “ misguide half - Sojourner Truth ” and do not inform consumers of the apps ’ data collecting and use practice .

The federal governor also alleges InMarket “ does trivial ” to aver that users of third - political party apps incorporating InMarket ’s tracking code ( also know as a software program development kit , or SDK ) were notify that their location data will be used for targeted advertising .

The FTC said that one unnamed photo - editing app incorporating InMarket ’s SDK sought location permission with a prompt stating that the data would be used to provide payoff and discounts , according to the FTC ’s complaint .
