GitHub today foretell that it will now allow developers to flip-flop between a number of big speech model when they apply Copilot Chat , its codification - centric ChatGPT - similar service . Until now , Copilot Chat was powered by OpenAI ’s GPT-4 . Going forward , developer can choose between Anthropic ’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet , Google ’s Gemini 1.5 Pro , and OpenAI ’s GPT-4o , o1 - prevue , and o1 - mini . Anthropic will launch first , with Gemini take after in a few hebdomad .
Some pundits may see this as yet another way for Microsoft to shorten its trust on OpenAI , but GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke framed it in terms of pay developers a choice . Not every model , after all , excels at every development - interrelate task , and some model are simply better at work with certain languages than others .
“ We really believe that the epoch of a single model is over , ” Dohmke told me . “ As you recognise , GitHub Copilot itself has always used multiple versions of the GPT-3 or -4 models for different undertaking . Where modest latency was required , we were using a faster , smaller theoretical account . Where we call for higher accuracy , we were using a bigger , more complex theoretical account . We , at GitHub , trust in developer choice and that developers — for reasons of society policy , benchmarks that they have seen , different programing language and , of course , personal orientation , or because they ’re using that theoretical account for other scenario already — prefer one of the competing simulation , and so we ’re officially partnering with both Anthropic and Google . ”
The squad had already done some of the prep work for this launch when it start out offer developer the choice between GPT-4 and GPT-4 o1 , whichlaunchedjust over a calendar month ago .
For now , this choice apply only to Copilot Chat and the newly set up Spark , but Dohmke noted that the troupe wants to bring this choice to all of its creature .
