Would n’t you want to know what technical school giants recognize about you ? That ’s precisely what Russian administration hackers want , too .
On Friday , Microsoft disclosed that the hacking group it call Midnight Blizzard , also have a go at it asAPT29or Cozy Bear — and widely believed to be frequent by the Russian government — hacked some corporate email accounts , include those of the party ’s “ older leadership squad and employee in our cybersecurity , legal , and other use . ”
Curiously , the hackers did n’t go after customer data or the traditional corporate information they may have normally gone after . They wanted to know more about themselves , or more specifically , they wanted to be intimate what Microsoft recognize about them , according to the company .
“ The investigation indicates they were initially targeting email accounts for data related to Midnight Blizzard itself , ” the caller wrotein a web log postandSEC revelation .
According to Microsoft , the hackers used a “ password spray attack ” — fundamentally brute forcing — against a bequest history , then used that account ’s permissions “ to get at a very minor percentage of Microsoft corporate electronic mail accounts . ”
Microsoft did not disclose how many electronic mail accounts were breached , nor precisely what information the hackers get at or stole .
Company spokespeople did not at once react to a request for gossip .

“ For Microsoft , this incident has highlighted the urgent need to move even faster . APT29 , or Cozy Bear , is wide believed to be a Russian chop grouping process responsible for a series of high - profile attacks , such as those againstSolarWindsin 2019 , the Democratic National Committee in 2015 , and many more .
