Miles Brundage , a longtime policy researcher at OpenAI and older consultant to the company ’s AGI forwardness team , has left .
“ Part of what made this a hard decision is that working at OpenAI is an incredibly high - impact opportunity , now more than ever , ” Brundage articulate . “ OpenAI ask employees who care deeply about the mission and who are attached to sustaining a cultivation of rigorous decision - fashioning about growing and deployment ( including internal deployment , which will become more and more important over time ) . ”
With Brundage ’s departure , OpenAI ’s economic research section , which until lately was a sub - team of AGI readiness , will move under OpenAI’snew chief economic expert , Ronnie Chatterji . The oddment of the AGI readiness team — which is winding down — will be distribute among other OpenAI divisions , Brundage say . Joshua Achiam , head of mission alignment , will take on some of AGI readiness ’ project .
An OpenAI spokesperson tell TechCrunch that the company “ fully supports ” Brundage ’s decision to pursue his policy enquiry outside manufacture and is “ deeply thankful ” for his contributions .
“ Brundage ’s architectural plan to go all - in on self-governing enquiry on AI policy throw him the opportunity to have an impingement on a wide graduated table , and we are excited to instruct from his work and follow its impact , ” the spokesperson said in a statement . “ We ’re sure-footed that in his new role , Miles will continue to provoke the bar for the timbre of policymaking in industry and political science . ”
The spokesperson did n’t say who will take over Brundage ’s responsibilities .

Brundage get together OpenAI in 2018 , where he began as a research scientist and afterward became the companionship ’s head of insurance inquiry . Prior to OpenAI , Brundage was a research fellow at the University of Oxford ’s Future of Humanity Institute .
