Automattic CEO and WordPress carbon monoxide - creatorMatt Mullenwegsaid he would be deactivating the accounts of several WordPress.org residential area member , two of whom he say planned to spearhead a new forking of the loose root WordPress project .
While community of interests critique of WordPress ’s governance is n’t fresh , the latest katzenjammer kick off back in September when Mullenwegpublicly chastised WP locomotive engine , a commercial host company built atop WordPress , for profiteering without giving much back . Things soon intensify ( read all about ithere ) , with WP Engine filing alawsuitafter it wasbannedfrom accessing key WordPress imagination , and then a courtordered WordPress to restore access .
Amongst all this , cardinal fig from within the wider WordPress community of interests have stepped forrad . Joost de Valk — Jehovah of WordPress - focused SEO tool Yoast ( andformermarketing and communications ’ steer for the WordPress Foundation ) — last month publishedhis “ vision for a new WordPress era,”where he discuss the potency for “ federated and main repositories . ”Karim Marucchi , CEO of enterprisingness web consulting firm Crowd Favorite , echoed similar thoughts ina separate web log billet .
WP locomotive , meanwhile , indicated it was on standbyto lend a corporate script .
Mullenweg , for his part , haspublicly supported the notionof a new WordPress fork — a terminal figure that describe when someone takes the code from an open source undertaking and make a transcript , which can take on a life of its own with a disjoined community of contributors .
In a sarcasm - ladenblog postpublished this dawn , Mullenweg consult to de Valk and Marucchi ’s architectural plan as a “ fork , ” though the duo have n’t announced any such plans — de Valk did , however , talk over the notion of creating federated “ mirrors ” ( a deposit copy ) for theme and plugins , among other changes .
“ Just having mirrors of WordPress.org also does n’t really puzzle out the trouble of a single political party controlling our individual update host , ” de Valk publish in his Emily Price Post last calendar month . “ For that , we need to verify that those mirrors federate with each other , and portion out each others data and … allow for independent stem and plugins to be host there . ”

In a statement send to TechCrunch , de Valk reiterated that at no point were they planning to fork WordPress , with Marucchiconveying the same message on X. Furthermore , de Valk has also since confirm that his WordPress.org account has n’t in fact been deactivated as of yet , telling TechCrunch he ’s had no communications or interaction with Mullenweg about the state of affairs .
Get forked
Earlier this week , Automatticannouncedit would reduce its contribution to the core WordPress open source project to align with WP Engine ’s own donation , a metrical quantify in hebdomadal hours . This spur de Valk totake to Xon Friday to indicate that he was unforced to lead on the next release of WordPress , with Marucchi adding that his “ team stand quick . ”
Collectively , de ValkandMarucchicontribute around 10 60 minutes per week to various aspects of the WordPress open source task . However , Mullenweg said that to give their independent effort the “ push it needs to get off the earth , ” he was deactivating their WordPress.org story .
“ I powerfully encourage anyone who wants to try different leading models or align with WP Engine to join up with their new effort , ” Mullenweg write .
At the same time , Mullenweg revealed he was also inactivate the account statement of three other people , with small account afford : Sé Reed , Heather Burns , andMorten Rand - Hendriksen . Reed , it ’s deserving noting , ispresident and CEOof a newly incorporated nonprofitcalledtheWP Community Collective , which is setting out to answer as a “ neutral menage for collaboration , donation , and resources ” around WordPress and the spacious open beginning ecosystem .
Burns , a former contributor to the WordPress project , took to X on Saturdayto express surprise at her defusing , noting that she had n’t been involved in the project since 2020 . Over on Bluesky , Rand - Hendriksensuggestedthat Mullenweg was target him and Burns because of their anterior objections to government at WordPress . He wrote :
So why is he [ Mullenweg ] target Heather and me ? Because we started talking about the need for proper governance , accountability , conflict of interest policy , and other thing back in 2017 . We both leave the task in 2019 , and seemingly he still holds a score .
It ’s worth noting that deactivate a WordPress.org account prevent the user from contribute through that groove , be it to the marrow project or any other plugins or themes they may be involve with . However , as it’shosted on GitHub , too , anyone is still able to get at the code should they wish to fork it .
In what was on the face of it a tongue - in - cheek suggestion , Mullenweg said that any new fork could be called “ JKPress , ” and they could view as a joint “ WordPress + JKPress summit ” next year .
“ Joost and Karim have a number of sheer and interesting estimate , and I ’m genuinely queer to see how they crop out , ” Mullenweg added . “ The peach of open source is they can take all ofthe GPL codification in WordPressand ship their imaginativeness . You do n’t take permission , you may just do things . If they make something that ’s awesome , we may even merge it back into WordPress , that ability for codification and estimation to freely hang between projection is part of what makes unfastened source such an engine for innovation . ”
This post was update to render elucidation that de Valk and Marucchi did n’t say they planned a crotch , instead it ’s about creating “ mirrors ” for the plugins and themes repositories , while also offering to take on the next release of WordPress . This post was further updated to clarify that , at the time of writing , de Valk ’s WordPress.org story is still alive .
