Airchatis a new societal media app that encourages users to “ just talk . ”
A former version of Airchat wasreleased last year , but the team — conduce by AngelList founder Naval Ravikant and former Tinder product exec Brian Norgard — rebuild the app and relaunched it on iOS and Android yesterday . presently invite - only , Airchat is already ranked # 27 in social networking on Apple ’s App Store .
Visually , Airchat should experience pretty familiar and intuitive , with the ability to follow other users , scroll through a feed of posts , then respond to , like , and partake those Charles William Post . The deviation is that the post and replies are audio transcription , which the app then transcribes .
When you open up Airchat , messages automatically get down playing , and you quick cycle through them by swiping up and down . If you ’re so fain , you may actually pause the audio recording and just learn schoolbook ; user can also share photos and video . But audio seems to be what everyone ’s focused on , and what Ravikant describe as transforming the dynamic compare to text edition - free-base social apps .
After link Airchat this morning time , most of the posts I come across were about the app itself , with Ravikant and Norgard answering question and soliciting feedback .
“ Humans are all mean to get along with other humans ; it just requires the innate voice , ” Ravikant said . “ Online text - only media has give us this illusion that masses ca n’t get along , but actually everybody can get along . ”
This is n’t the first time technical school startups have wager on voice as the next big social mass medium matter . But Airchat ’s asynchronous , threaded posts make for a pretty different experience than the live chat rooms that in brief boom on Clubhouse and Twitter Spaces . Norgard debate that this approach take the stage fright barrier to take part , because “ you could take as many pass at compose a substance on here as you like , and nobody get it on . ”

In fact , he said that in conversations with former drug user , the team found that “ most of the citizenry using Airchat today are very introspective and timid . ”
in person , I have n’t convinced myself to post anything yet . I was more interested in seeing how others were using the app — plus , I have a love - hatred relationship with the audio of my voice .
Still , there ’s something to be said for get wind Ravikant and Norgard explain their vision , rather than just read the transcriptions , which can overleap subtlety of enthusiasm , intonation , etc . And I ’m especially rummy to see how deadpan caper and shitposting translate ( or do n’t ) into audio .
I also struggle a bit with the upper . The app nonremittal to 2x audio playback , which I thought sounded unnatural , particularly if the whole idea is foster human connection . you’re able to reset the speed by entertain down the pause button , but at 1x , I comment I ’d start skimming when listening to longer Emily Post ; then I ’d unremarkably bound off ahead before listening to the full audio . But maybe that ’s fine .
Meanwhile , Ravikant ’s opinion in the big businessman of interpreter to cut down on acrimony does n’t necessarily excrete the need for capacity moderation features . He articulate the provender is powered by “ some complex rules around hiding spam and trolls and hoi polloi that you or they may not want to get wind from , ” but as of publication , he had not respond to a follow - up exploiter interrogative about capacity mitigation .
Asked about monetisation — that is , when we might start visit ads , audio or otherwise — Ravikant said there ’s “ no monetization air pressure on the company whatsoever . ” ( He described himself as “ not the exclusive investor ” but “ a braggart investor ” in the caller . )
“ I could n’t care less about monetisation , ” he tell . “ We ’ll run this thing on a shoestring if we have to . ”
