It ’s fairish to say the NFT space has lost a wad of its sparkle over the past few years , but that has n’t stopped some founder , investor and task from hauling along in Hope of another surge . Devin Finzer , the chief operating officer behind OpenSea , one of the first NFT marketplaces to gain serious traction and market share , is still betting vainglorious on the sphere .

On January 1 , 2022 , NFT global sales volume peak at $ 23.73 billion . Two year afterward , by the first 24-hour interval of 2024,they had fallen 94%to a simple $ 1.4 billion .

That variety of decline in sales book obviously has had an wallop on the revenue side of OpenSea ’s patronage , but Finzer says it ’s not something the company is “ laser focused on . ” rather , it is working to improve its sum products and user engagement , and bring in new incumbents — work “ that sort of direct to high volumes , ” he told me of late on TechCrunch’sChain Reaction podcast .

The NFT marketplace exploded back in 2021 when everyone and their grandmother was spend on NFTs of profile characterization and digital graphics , but Finzer think those were early use cases . “ We still have so much further to go in terms of act all of the encompassing raiment of thing that NFT ’s can exemplify , ” he say . “ Gaming is an object lesson of a category that ’s still really early . ”

Founded in 2017 , OpenSea quickly became one of the most well - bang and well - funded NFT market in the world . It has raised over $ 400 million in total , and some of its backer admit VC firm like Andreessen Horowitz and Paradigm , as well as fame such as Kevin Durant and Ashton Kutcher .

But no amount of money can buy lasting success , and Finzer is aware of that reality , noting that his company is taste to fine - tune its intersection and ramp up for the long ladder .

“ [ customer ] fare for the mathematical product experience ab initio , then perplex around if the Cartesian product continues to cope with their needs and continue to improve alongside the evolution of the outer space , ” he said .

Since its origination , OpenSea has seen sale of over $ 67.24 million with $ 36.46 billion in volume , according to DappRadardata . In the past 30 days , it rank as the third - largest NFT marketplace , behind OKX NFT Marketplace and Blur , with about $ 100 million in volume .

Finzer admits that the companies and products he ’s most fast to are the ones he ’s been using for a long time , and those have improved their drug user experience . “ The foresighted - term approach to user trueness is really continuing to build a firm product offer . ”

Going forrader , Finzer is most activated about web3 play and “ physical items present as NFTs . ” He thinks those two area will be the most striking use vitrine in the NFT blank in 2024 .

“ If you look at existing marketplaces for rare physical stool pigeon , that ’s really quite vivacious ; there ’s a whole residential district of people that like to buy and sell those sorts of physical things , ” he say . “ So one of the really cool use pillowcase for entities is , you take a strong-arm duo of sneakers , you make an NFT , [ and ] you’re able to grease one’s palms and sell that NFT as many times as it can move around from person to person before it ’s actually redeem for the forcible item . ”

OpenSea has been working with some weapons platform to set in motion strong-arm and digital collectable , Finzer said . “ There ’s a lot more chance to explore and a lot more opportunity for growth there as well . ”

Despite the NFT market ’s drawbacks , OpenSea desire to stick to its initial mission — to nurture open digital economy and “ get that holy grail ” of a strong user experience , Finzer said . He views it as a “ broad visual modality , ” but point out that it encapsulates OpenSea ’s goal of establish the blocking for “ all form of different thriftiness ” in the NFT space .

“ It ’s not just about art and profile picture . It ’s really about representing all sorts of different things on - chemical chain   .   .   .   and then some thing that we have n’t even imagine yet . ”

finally , the hope is to enable newfangled use compositor’s case , excogitation and new jobs in the future , Finzer lend . “ NFTs , we really think of them as this sort of generic building block for brand - new digital saving . I mean we ’re still kind of at the beginning of that vogue . ”
