Perplexity ’s CEO , Aravind Srinivas , would n’t say how Perplexity defines “ piracy ” in an onstage audience with Devin Coldewey at TechCrunch ’s Disrupt 2024 conference .

It ’s a touchy subject . News Corp ’s Dow Jones and the New York Post havesuedPerplexity over what they describe as a “ content kleptocracy . ” Many other word sites haveexpressed concernsthat Perplexity intimately replicates their message — just this month , The New York Timessentthe startup a cease and refrain .

Srinivas was adamant that Perplexity “ always cites its root ” and does n’t claim ownership of any content .

“ It ’s surfacing subject matter from the web , summarizing it in a mode that the user can tolerate , ” he said , “ and then provides all this information — exactly how journalist do their job , or academics do their job , or educatee . ”

In a recentblog postresponding to the Dow Jones causa , Perplexity argued that publishers wished its applied science “ did n’t subsist ” and would opt “ publicly report facts are owned by corporations . ” But the post failed to address whether Perplexity allegedly regurgitates content at a massive scale , as some publishers lay claim — and then competes with those publishing company for the same hearing .

Areportthis week from AI piracy detector Copyleaks found that one Perplexity summary paraphrased 48 % of a Forbes clause , while another included 28 % paraphrasing and 7 % plagiarization ( as Copyleaks delineate it ) .

Srinivas pointed out that Perplexity cites its sources — albeit sometimes with mistake .

“ At the end of every sentence , there ’s a footnote or the comparable page for where it ’s truly information from , ” he suppose . “ Of course , it ’s not , like , passing accurate … but we ’re trying our unspoiled to do those kind of things . ”

“ Well , [ Dow Jones ] claimed that we did n’t respond , ” Srinivas said . “ And that ’s not lawful . And we in reality responded the same day . So , I trust people appreciate that our attempt is to collaborate and engage and work together . ”

Srinivas also pushed back against the notion that citizenry use Perplexity to sum paywalled clause , which the Dow Jones lawsuit touch to . Instead , he said , most of Perplexity ’s user sprain to the platform for financial enquiry , despite Perplexity’shallucinationsfrom fourth dimension to clock time .

“ Nobody fare to Perplexity for consume their day-by-day tidings , ” he said . “ People come here to make sentience of what ’s going on . Like , how does that particular piece of news affect me ? In the context of news , should I uphold to corrupt more Nvidia stock ? These are not the variety of interrogative sentence you could come and necessitate TechCrunch , but you come and ask Perplexity . ”

Perplexity issaidto be in talk to raise around $ 500 million at an $ 8 billion valuation . Srinivas recently said that the platform hit 100 million hunting queries per week , and Perplexity is releasing products at a rapid clip , from online shopping tools to sports score tracker to newadvertisingcapabilities .

So what ’s the end game ? Perhaps , mused Srinivas , a world in which “ scientists claim possession over a certain fact ” and “ other people ” — publishing house , presumably — ca n’t control where they look or how they ’re contextualized .

“ Our impression is that facts take to be universally distributed to everybody , ” Srinivas state .
