MIT enquiry scientist Jerry Pratt is back at it . In 2022 , he left Boardwalk Robotics , a humanoid inauguration he found and led , and joined the well - funded social rank of the Bay Area - based robotics firm Figure as its CTO months before it cash in one’s chips stealing . But he andFigurequietly parted ways last calendar month .
Last week , when Pratt made his departure publicon LinkedIn , he used the chance to announce the origination of another ledger entry in the increasingly push world of humanoids . Persona AI is currently as early microscope stage as early stagecoach cause , having been formally found only last month .
The inauguration is the inspiration of Pratt and longtime comrade Nic Radford , an industry veteran with his own impressive resume , including seven years as part of NASA ’s robotics before founding Nauticus Robotics and Jacobi Motors .
“ We want to get some early indications from both people who wanted to work out with us and investors , that if we did something like this on LinkedIn , it would n’t settle flat on its human face , ” Radford told TechCrunch .
The news was as much a hiring promulgation as brand unveiling . “ Hey LinkedIn ! ” Pratt enthusiastically notedon the business land site . “ Ever dream of creating your own Iron Man suit but without the billionaire playboy part ? ”
Radford and Pratt say they desire to bring on additional 10 to 20 “ founders ” ( their quotes ) to help shape the company . “ Jerry and I are obviously a polar part of this , ” Radford said , “ but so will the next 18 the great unwashed in . We really require to illustrate to them the esprit de army corps of the company . ”
At this early stage , Persona ’s pitch does n’t cast far from the various humanoid house with which it ’s coiffure to compete . The basic text on its website is for the most part a celebration of those technical breakthroughs that take shape the foundation of this singular moment in robotics .

The laminitis write :
Now is a good metre for the commercialization of mechanical man . Computer vision and perceptual experience algorithms can now observe question , identify and segment objects , and count on poses at frame pace ; electronics and computation have shrivel in size and increased in public presentation , such that they can be amply onboard a robot and not hog the energy budget ; mobility and use algorithms are now competent enough to direct around rooms and do commercially useful work ; machine learning is increasing robot capabilities while shrink programming onus ; investors are starting to believe in the potential of mechanical man ; and commercial entity are requesting humanoid robots in various diligence where they can sum up substantial value .
That ’s about as deep as the pitch presently goes outside of investor deck and employee interviews . Whatever reward Persona believes it will ultimately have over Agility , Boston Dynamics , Figure and the remainder is n’t clear at this very early stagecoach .
“ In some ways , it ’ll be very similar , in other ways it ’s different , ” Radford answer mysteriously . “ It ’s like the way GM feels themselves against Ford or Toyota or any elevator car company . Every company feel , late down , they ’ve got certain competitive advantages . And then , deep down , every fellowship ’s commoditized and distilled down into the same things . They all provide shipping . Do we have our version of the Dodge Hemi ? We ’d like to think so . ”
Pratt , for one , experience surefooted enough in Persona ’s imagination to leave a top spot at one of humanoid robotics ’ most big and best - fund company , Figure . Pratt says the rent was amicable , andwhen I spokewith Figure founding father and CEO Brett Adcock last hebdomad about his new project , Cover , he talk extremely of his former CTO . Pratt says the decision was , in part , geographic .
“ I was going between Pensacola [ Florida ] and California every two weeks , ” Pratt read . “ At first when I joined Figure , I thought [ Pratt and his wife ] could move to California at about the two - year bell ringer . I had contrive to do it , but it just really would n’t work out . It was a middling mutual parting of the ways . ”
Rather than setting up shop in a traditional robotics hotbed like Boston or Pittsburgh , Persona will divide its operation between Pratt ’s home of Pensacola and Houston . The latter will serve as the caller ’s primary headquarters , eventually accommodate around two - tierce of Persona ’s stave .
