There are a bit of task now afoot that are focalize on developing a video - first app for the open source social networkBluesky . However , one stands out from the rest : An upcoming app calledReelo(which has sincerebrandedto Spark ) is n’t building on top of the Bluesky social mesh , as so many others are , but is build on the underlying AT Protocol that Bluesky uses . This allow for it to severalize itself with a broader feature limit that will include support for farsighted videos , filters , impression , a music library , and , eventually , livestreaming .
Many apps in this space — likeBluescreen , Videos for Bluesky , andSkylight — are cumber by Bluesky ’s limitations . As Bluesky was originally design to compete with X ( formerly Twitter ) , it does n’t have a feature set corresponding to an app like TikTok .
These limitations make elbow room for a Modern type of telecasting app powered by the AT Protocol that could interoperate with Bluesky , as Reelo does , but can also stand on its own .
Other Bluesky video apps work as a layer on top of Bluesky ’s political platform , explains Reelo ’s developer , João Davi S. N. , base in Rio Grande do Sul , Brazil . That mean they miss central features that would permit them to contend more directly with TikTok , such as creator shaft and monetization .
Like other developer , João Davi initially try out the idea of building a telecasting app for Bluesky , too . But he quickly get that it was n’t what he had in mind .
“ When I finished the first prototype using Bluesky technology , I said , ‘ fine , this is bull . I can do nothing with this , ’ ” he articulate . After all , João Davi designate out , it was more than upload video recording that made TikTok work .
“ It was music , effect , [ and ] a change of capability , ” he says . “ Creating the video , put up the video is definitely not the most significant thing . It ’s make TV that catch attention . ”

To speak this , João Davi resolve to work on a video app based on the AT Protocol , like Bluesky , but one that has its own back destruction , code base , and lexicon . ( The latter he says refers to how the codification dictate how the app ’s aspect is surrender . )
This choice allow Reelo to bear out videos of up to three minute long — longer than Bluesky — and later will allow for for livestreaming . By comparison , Bluesky and other third - party video apps built on top of Bluesky are limited to Bluesky ’s one - mo video funding ( unless the company changes that in the hereafter ) .
As a sole developer with a freestanding business organisation fund his efforts , he expect it will be March before he launches Reelo to the public . ( João Davi has already had some investor interest , which could speed up campaign , but nothing is confirmed as of yet . )
Reelo features a swipeable upright video provender with familiar fundamental interaction buttons for liking , commenting , sharing , and more . To store user datum , Reelo will run for its own palladium ( personal data server ) , but technical users can set up their own PDS , just as they can for Bluesky .
The app will interoperate with Bluesky so user can find their friends , but stake Reelo videos back to Bluesky could be an optional step — like a checkbox in the app ’s user port . ( When cross - posting , one - minute TV could be publish straight to Bluesky , but longer video would need to be an embed . )
Also like Bluesky , Reelo could bid multiple custom provender , including one feature Bluesky video , another for Reelo video , and various topical feed for thing like Music , Dance , and more .
To monetize the app , João Davi is considering both ads and subscriptions , where revenue could be shared with creators . Premium plan may include things like livestreaming backing and higher - quality video , but nothing is define as of yet .
However , João Davi intends to make the rip fairish to creators . “ I only need money to devote [ for ] the server and whoever is working . More than that , it ’s like , ‘ What I do with this money ? ’ ” he says .
Reelo is n’t yet available but will found a sign - up for beta testers early this twelvemonth .
Correction : João Davi lives in Rio Grande do Sul , Brazil , not Brasília . This was update after publication .
Reelo updated its name to Spark after publication on 2/16/25 .
