The U.S. eatery industry is expected to pass$1 trillion in salesfor the first prison term this year , despite wide economic pressure on consumers . NowRestaurant365 , a startup building tech to deal those business sector , has raised a hot $ 175 million to capitalise on that outgrowth .
The financing is being led by ICONIQ Growth , with KKR and L Catterton also participating , all existing backers of the company . Restaurant365 is not disclosing the valuation it received in the circle , but Tony Smith , its co - founder and CEO , confirm to TechCrunch that it is an up round .
“ We ’re mad that [ the line ] continues to grow and that we have very supportive investor behind us , ” he articulate . For linguistic context , last year , when the startupraised $ 135 million , it expose that it had run a $ 1 billion valuation .
The startup is also not disclose any unexampled usage figures . Last class , we describe that its software was being used in 40,000 positioning , and that is still the number it is sharing today . The company was reportedly set to generate revenue of$100 millionin 2023 , based onper - location pricingthat start from $ 469 per location per calendar month .
found out of Irvine , California , Restaurant365 provides restaurants an all - in - one chopine to manage their accounting , inventory and workforce , along with an analytics suite to help interpret trends within the business — essentially everything except point of sale transactions .
Smith say the design is to use the newfangled money to continue expanding the inauguration ’s suite of product , as well as its customer base following theacquisition of ExpandShare , a preparation platform for eatery , in April . “ We are also earmarking some funds for future acquisitions , ” he added .
Although Restaurant365 is used by both independent restaurant and larger chains , Smith said another big focussing will be building tools catering to “ major hospitality brand . ”

Unlike a portion of hoi polloi who render to resolve problem in industries they ’re intimate with , Restaurant365 ’s founders have little to do with the human race of intellectual nourishment military service . “ By the time I fine-tune college , I ’d had 12 jobs , [ only ] one of which was at a pizza restaurant . So I would n’t say my restaurant experience was robust , ” Smith order .
Rather , he was a tekki who figure an chance to address an obvious problem . “ My first job out of college was in technology , and it was exciting to see the future that software could recreate in all types of businesses . ”
He , along with John Moody ( chief strategist ) and Morgan Harris ( chief community of interests officer ) , founded the inauguration in 2011 to speak a pretty painful problem for restaurateur : They run on very slight tolerance ( one reason why so many restaurants eventually die ) , and they have to use a jumble of software to get things done .
The cobalt - founders may not have known much about restaurants early on , but they knew they had to graft that knowledge in to mend the problem . “ We directly surrounded ourselves with eatery folk to fully empathize the job they were facing , ” Smith say . He sound out that included some unlikely go - aboriginal market research .
“ We ’d go to restaurant and await until they close at night to speak with the manager , who must have been a little concerned we were stalking them , ” he read . “ I think of asking for a clipboard so I could depend armory with them , and they probably thought we were mad , join in their job for free . [ But ] it was shocking to learn how complex escape a restaurant is — from the pauperism to foreshorten solid food waste , control costs and manage labor . ”
It did seem like a strong match , though . “ The problems restaurants struggle to solve align perfectly with our skills , and when we depend at what was usable on the market , we bed we could create a more complete solution to help eating house prosper , ” he said . “ Restaurant people are so hardworking , and it ’s a privilege to work with them and avail solve those problems . ”
That order , Restaurant365 ’s market is quite crowded with everything from breaker point solution to all - in - one plan of attack . Bigger participant let in Toast , Lightspeed and Crunchtime ( no telling to TechCrunch ! ) .
Smith claims his startup is the only one bundling the functions that it does . Indeed , many of the other companies targeting the food serving industry start with solution for period of cut-rate sale or workforce direction , rather than the mix that Restaurant365 provides .
“ Our major differentiators are that we ’re all - in - one and eatery - specific , ” he added .
Will Griffith , a founding collaborator at investor ICONIQ Growth , said that the startup ’s attack was the more attractive for how it bring together essential functions in a usable way .
“ Restaurant365 ’s suite consolidates essential procedure like accounting system , inventory management , paysheet , and employee scheduling into a unified system , ” he said in an emailed statement . “ Whether enterprise stain are trim down disbursement or investment , they always take a seamless period of info to speedily identify area in motive of improvement , be it in staffing or supply direction , to consistently and dramatically reduce cost and improve profitableness . ”
Still , there is a big opportunity to consolidate given the huge number of point - solution players in the marketplace .
“ When we started the company , we see countless restaurants shinny to get by with multiple unconnected arrangement that ride inefficiency and limited visibility , ” Smith say . “ We launched as a fused product , and we ’re thankful that operator and the market at large validated that strategy in both bank us with their business , and in demand applied science providers create more complete offerings .
“ While we ’ve made a act of acquisitions , we also adorn heavily in our product development and research teams , and will stay on to do so . For us , the question is n’t whether to add more ware organically or through acquisition . The inquiry is what will bestow the most economic value to our customers ’ businesses . Then we go out and do it , ” he added .
