province official say 100 of thousands of Rhode Island residents could be impact by a cyberattack on the Department of State ’s on-line portal for social service , with a “ high probability ” that personally identifiable selective information was breached .
According toan updatefrom Governor Dan McKee ’s office , the attack targeted RIBridges , which Rhode Island occupant use to apply for and access program such as Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program ( SNAP ) .
The attack also targeted the HealthSource RI insurance market . McKee ’s billet read “ any individual who has received or applied for health coverage and/or health and human service programs or benefit could be bear upon by this making water . ”
The info accessed by the cyberattackers could let in name , addresses , dates of birth , Social Security numbers , and banking data .
The RIBridges system is work by Deloitte , which first notified the land of a potential cyberattack on December 5 — but McKee ’s office said it was n’t vindicated then that sensitive information had been breached . On Friday , December 13 , Deloitte reassert that there was “ malicious codification ” in the organisation and worked with the country to “ proactively ” take the system down to address the menace .
In the meantime , the land said Rhode Island residents can still use paper diligence to apply for benefits .
The New York Times reportsthat at a press group discussion Friday , the state ’s primary digital policeman , Brian Tardiff , said cybercriminals arrogate responsibility for the attack have threatened to release the data unless they receive a payment .
