OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is using his European olive tree oil inefficiently in an “ offence to horticulture , ” the Financial Times humorously report .

For its “ Lunch with the FT ” series , the paper joined Altman in his kitchen . He prepared a garlicky alimentary paste and salad , take a rare suspension from his demanding caper ofadvocating for the perturbation of American copyright law .

Altman uses Graza olive oil color , which comes in attractively post squeeze bottles that are democratic on social media ( he is a millennian , after all ) . But Altman ’s preference for over - price , “ trendy ” oil is not the crime — the offense is that he appears to fundamentally misunderstand Graza ’s schtick . The party trade clearly marked “ sizzle ” and “ mizzle ” varieties of its European olive tree oil for sautéing and polish off saucer , respectively .

To be fair , Spanish olive cultivation is n’t precisely common knowledge . But if you are so consecrated to the art of cooking that you sprout two types of olive oil on your kitchen counter , you would plausibly know that one bottle is far costly than the other because it ’s meant to be used as a post - cooking “ drizzle , ” not a frying oil .

Altman used the “ drizzle ” finishing oil in his sauté pan , even though the “ sizzle ” oil was just inches out . It ’s like take clean St. Basil the Great and cooking it down in a pan as though it ’s spinach plant : It ’s a waste of precious earthly textile . At that charge per unit , you might as well just throw some dollar sign bills in the cooking pan … which is notnotthe playbook of Silicon Valley startups , incidentally .

OpenAI raised a record - setting$40 billionin a new backing round this year , yet it continues to bleed money , reportedly losing about$5 billionlast year . It ’s not exonerated how the company will turn a profit with such massive costs . OpenAI was at one pointlosing moneyon its $ 200 - per - month ChatGPT Pro plan .

Altman ’s culinary faux pas likely ca n’t throw away much luminance on OpenAI ’s financials . But if you ’re the kind of person who wastes pricey cooking crude , it could be that you ’re bite VC money , too .
