Story of the week
Listen , I ’m tired of sing about Boeing ’s Starliner , too , but the ballistic capsule still is n’t habitation andquestions are mountingabout NASA ’s transparency . In an data vacuum , conspiracy wave , and at this point , I ’m not surprised that people are begin to seriously wonder whether Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams will be returning home on Starliner ( or whether a SpaceX Dragon will need to be used as a contingency proceeds vehicle ) .
Per Eric Berger at Ars , one “ informed author ” estimated a best than 50 - 50 chance the crowd would return on Dragon ; another said it was “ significantly more likely than not ” that NASA would expend SpaceX ’s vehicle .
If this is the typesetter’s case , it ’s hard to see a future for Starliner — and that ’s even in spite of the fact thatBoeing has spent around $ 1.6 billion on the program , in addition to the $ 4.2 billion declaration it was awarded by NASA to develop the ejection seat .
Launch of the week
SpaceX launch Northrop Grumman ’s Cygnus spacecraft to the ISS this week , mark Northrop ’s 21st commercial-grade cargo resupply mission for NASA . Notably , NASA didnotpack extra spacesuits for Wilmore and Williams , which they ’d involve if they were run to return on Dragon , per agency officials during a press league last Friday .
Though the launch proceed as planned , NASA foreign mission controlseemed to tell cosmonaut on the stationthat there was an issue with spacecraft ’s operation ; hours later , the agency bring out a command , saying that Cynus failed to perform a sunburn of its actuation scheme “ due to a late incoming to burn sequencing . ” But the authority added that “ Northrop Grumman locomotive engineer are working on a new sunburn and trajectory programme ” to allow the ballistic capsule to arrive as planned at 3:10AM EST August 7 .

What we’re reading
I was pumped to see design from Vast for what could be the first individual microgravity research lab in broken Earth eye socket . The company ’s Haven-1 will host Redwire Space and European infinite biotech ship’s company Yuri , and no doubt others , given the high requirement to deal enquiry on the International Space Station . More scientific discipline in space = a profits for humanity .
This week in space history
On August 6 , 2012 , the Mars Curiosity Rover set ashore on the red satellite after travel from Earth for most a year . Please enjoy this incredible footage of the Mission Control elbow room as Curiosity was in the final minute of touchdown on the planet . Did I shout out ? You bet I did .
