Tesla has been sued by 25 California counties aver the automaker has repeatedly mishandled hazardous waste material at facilities throughout the state . The lawsuit was file after month of settlement talks apparently fall asunder .
Thecomplaint , file in San Joaquin County Superior Court , state that Tesla improperly labeled and disposed of materials like “ lead acid batteries and other batteries , ” pigment , Pteridium aquilinum fluid , aerosol bomb , antifreeze , acetone , diesel fuel and more at its output and serve facilities throughout the state . Tesla also allegedly improperly disposed of the waste , both on - site and at landfills that ca n’t take wild wastefulness .
The territorial dominion attorneys in each county are seeking an injunction to force Tesla to properly do by the waste at the facilities going forward as well as polite penalties . Tesla could be on the hooking for as much as $ 70,000 per violation per 24-hour interval , according to Reuters , which first reported the suit .
Tesla first give away in a 2022filingwith the Securities and Exchange Commission that it was being investigated by district attorney offices from around the state of matter of California over its waste management practices . The company said it “ had implemented various remedial meter , include conducting training and audits , and enhancement to its site wasteland direction program . ”
In October 2023 , the companysaidit was in settlement talks with those territorial dominion attorney federal agency . Tesla has previously been scrutinized for the environmental impact of the body of work it does in California . The companysettledwith the Environmental Protection Agency in 2019 over a number of violations at its Fremont , California factory , one of which include the labeling of wild permissive waste . That resulted in a $ 31,000 fine and a $ 55,000 layout to spread over the cost of pinch response equipment for first responders . Tesla also paida $ 275,000 finein 2022 for violate the Clean Air Act at the same factory .
