In startup Edwin Herbert Land , the life bicycle of birth , ontogeny and the inevitable leap of faith go on at a breakneck pace . Still , we from time to time fall into the trap of aggrieve the demise of these companies . My view ? That ’s a poor move .

The whole point of a startup is to work up something imperishable . A incorporated Mount Rushmore , if you will . Yes , but : Dive a bit deeper , and you ’ll realize that the very model of startups is dependent on drama — whether that ’s dramatic ascent or a speedy smash into the nearest mountainside . There ’s no in - between . And in that moral force we can see why we should n’t mourn nonstarter .

A startup , in all its ephemeral glory , is basically a mathematical group of people in a canonized garage , seek to prove that their large mind is n’t just a bunch of live atmosphere . Their raison d’être ? To carve out a niche , to be the answer to a question nobody thought to inquire . A science experimentation with more caffein and draw requests and fewer base hit goggles and ill at ease conversations beside posters at a skill average . Or , in the words of Steve Blank : “ A inauguration is a irregular brass designed to search for a quotable and scalable business model . ”

The keyword is “ temporary . ” Startups are on a crusade , seeking the holy grail of a business model that does n’t just work but scales up like a beanstalk . ( And these days , an AI - speed beanstalk . ) Should they strickle gold , they then embark on a metamorphosis , go from scrappy underdog into full - go down on collective beasts . From hairy , sweaty , swearing Caterpillar to proud , IPO - bound butterflies dart to riches beyond their fantastic aspiration .

In this grand scheme , a inauguration ’s endgame is to grow up and allow dwelling house . The moment it becomes a bona fide , quotable byplay , it ’s not a inauguration any longer . Everything changes overnight — and quite a few startups seem to leave that . Once you find that business exemplar , it becomes a game of acceleration and execution .

On the drab side of this lunation , if our brave slight startup ca n’t make the magic happen , it ’s curtains . Time to compact up the Ping - Pong mesa and twist off the light . It ’s a toughened cookie to crumble : all those dream , all that pizza - fueled later - night British Labour Party , queer ! But , hey , failure is the technical school world ’s favorite instructor .

In fact , the startup might huckster its brilliant bits to some bragging fish or get “ aqui - hired , ” which is a corporate way of saying , “ We like your brains , we ’ll take them . ” And so , the inauguration vanishes , either bolt up or just gone .

That ’s the script : You come after and grow , or you cut out and fade away . There is no in - between .

Startups are designed to be shoot lead : legal brief , bright , and destined to either blaze out a track or fizzle out . This unrelenting turnover rate is the lifeblood of the tech ecosystem .

I believe it ’s a good matter . Yes , startups should discontinue being startups , but that ’s not a downer ; it ’s a high - five to human ingenuity and the indefatigable pursuit for answers . Win or lose , every startup is a chapter in the epic saga of progress in tech land , paving the way for the next batch of dreamers , doers and perhaps the odd delusional spook .

But regardless , we should kibosh being so mopy about the demise of startups . It ’s a good thing . We sprinkle ourselves off , learn the lessons , get some therapy , and try again .

Remembering the startups we lost in 2023
