Mercedes - Benz hasdeliveredthe first all - electric popemobile to the Vatican : a modified variation of theGerman automaker ’s G - ClassSUV .

Some of the biggest changes from the standard G - Class involve using the four galvanizing motor at each bike to carefully ascertain the fomite at low speeds as it go around the Vatican grounds . There is also a dedicated height - adjustable swivel butt so the pope can address more of his audience .

While it ’s an all - new type of propulsion for the Bishop of Rome ’s dedicated drive , it ’s not a new partner . Mercedes - Benz has build these types of vehicles for the Vatican for around 100 year , and a 2015analysis by the Washington Postshowed the automaker had build roughly one - third of all so - called popemobiles to that stage .

Mercedes - Benz say it ’s been working with the Vatican on the fomite for around a year . But it was n’t the first company that require to electrify the Catholic Pope ’s wheel . Now - defunct EV startup Fisker once claim that it was working with the Vatican to create a special version of its Ocean SUV for the Roman Catholic Pope . The rigor of that claimalways seemed suspicious at best , though , and Fiskerwent bankrupt earlier this class .
