Last weekend , Jeffrey Goldberg , editor - in - chief of The Atlantic , obtain himself at the center of a digital debacle when he was circumstantially added to a Signal group schmooze with 17 U.S. government officials who were discussing imminent airstrikes in Yemen . For some , the incident has raised questions about how phone numbers finish up in contact lists and how message apps pull in users .

National Security Adviser Mike Waltz on Wednesday stated that Goldberg ’s number was “ sucked in ” from another impinging . But on aSunday talk of the town show , Goldberg crowd back , enjoin , “ This is n’t The Matrix . Phone numbers do n’t just get nurse into other phones . ” Goldberg sum , “ My telephone number was in his phone because my sound turn is in his telephone . ”

Signal ’s typically forthright chair Meredith Whittaker has not directly addressed the national security snafu , but before in the week , she took to decade , write that , “ Right now there are a lot of novel eyes on Signal , and not all of them are familiar with secure messaging and its nicety . ” She went on to line and oppose the service , call it the “ gold criterion for private , good communications . ”
