Tony Fadell , the Father of the Church of the iPod and founder of Nest , take the level atTechCrunch Disrupt 2024on Tuesday to peach about how building the next multiplication of deep tech startups require mission - driven a – hole . The enterpriser and investor did not hold back onstage as he call out Silicon Valley for its entitlement and douse on large language models ( LLMs ) being “ be intimate - it - alls , ” earning a wave of laughs and hand clapping across the fully packed auditorium .
Fadell explained why he believes “ military mission - driven a – holes are a good thing , and in fact , needed to make and ship world - class engineering science products .
“ hoi polloi work with people who are very difficult , and those are the ones that create and exchange the world . But there are two types of a – holes . Everybody ’s an a – muddle , but you got ta understand why , ” Fadell say . “ If they ’re an a – yap , because it ’s their egotism , they ’re trying to push people down , that is an egoistical a – jam . But if you are an a – hole on the detail , you ’re sitting there fight on the detail , you ’re not criticizing the hoi polloi , but you are critiquing their piece of work and saying you’re able to do best , that is a missionary work - driven a – muddle . ”
Fadell thinks it ’s not a spoiled thing when someone is smashing on the detail and take a leak sure their team is getting things proper . He believe that rivet on contingent is what you need to make great products , and when you have a coach who cares , that ’s a good matter .
The entrepreneur and investor also called out Silicon Valley for its entitlement , making a joke about how startups are n’t take Googlers because “ you ’re prosperous that they even showed up . ”
“ They just showed up on a bus , and they amount in for lunch , and then take up the bus home , ” Fadell say . “ They say , ‘ I worked today , I ’m getting a massage , oh , where ’s the yogurt ? ’ That ’s why I do n’t wish any of our startups hiring most Googlers because they ’ve get this culture thing . ”
He mention that during his Clarence Shepard Day Jr. at General Magic in the ’ XC , the team settle they were n’t go to hire citizenry from the East Coast because of their demand .

“ We say , we will never charter the great unwashed from the East Coast , ” Fadell read . “ So this was IBM and Sperry and all that s — because they had to have their driver , or they had to have their company car , and they had to have their bodied lunch and their particular executive director toilet . We ’re like we ’re never hiring any of these people . It ’s just not going to work ; it ’s a culture clash . And now I wake up today and Silicon Valley has wrick into that due south — , and I ’m like get me the f — out of here , yeah ? Entitlement everywhere ! ”
Fadell then went on to call out LLM for being bed - it - alls , joking that no one wants to hire a cognize - it - all . He believes LLMs are great for sure thing , but they ca n’t be adopted across the board .
He think LLM can be great for amusement , like if you ’re asking ChatGPT to write you a funny poem . However , Fadell says that since Master of Laws are prostrate to hallucinations , they should n’t be used in cases where people could be at endangerment . For instance , he thinks doctors should n’t be using ChatGPT to create patient reports because people could be harmed if treatment plan are go into falsely or drugs are miscall .
“ If you look at artificial - specific models , they crop really well , ” Fadell suppose . “ They do n’t hallucinate , but LLM are attempt to be this worldwide thing because we ’re attempt to make science fabrication happen . ”
