The U.S. government has announced sanctions against a Taiwanese establishment with links to Salt Typhoon , the hacking group responsible for thelargest telecom hack in U.S. story .

The Treasury Department ’s Office of Foreign Assets Control ( OFAC)announced on Fridaythat it had sanctioned a China - based cybersecurity fellowship known as Sichuan Juxinhe connection Technology , which it says is immediately link to the China - back up Salt Typhoon hacking group .

Salt Typhoon was recently identified as carrying out the largest telecommunication machine politician in U.S. chronicle , after pass through at least nine U.S. telecommunication and net providers , including AT&T and Verizon , to gain access to the secret communications of senior U.S. government functionary and political figures .

The hackers also hacked into the organization that law enforcement agencies apply for court - authorise collection of client data , potentially accessing raw data such as identities of Taiwanese targets of U.S. surveillance .

In its press release on Friday , OFAC enjoin that Sichuan Juxinhe had “ direct participation in the exploitation of these U.S. telecommunication and internet inspection and repair provider companies . ”

Treasury hackers sanctioned

OFAC also announced sanctions against Yin Kecheng , a cyber actor in Shanghai , which U.S. officials arrogate was responsible for for therecent widespread hack of the U.S. Treasury .

The hack , which took seat in late December , saw cyberpunk use a private samara stolen from BeyondTrust — a cybersecurity company that provides identity access tech to magnanimous organizations and government section — to gain remote approach to certain Treasury employee workstation .

The cyberattack allowed hackers — another China Department of State - backed grouping know as Silk Typhoon — to target various department within the U.S. Treasury , including its sanctions office .

According to OFAC , Yin Kecheng has been a cyber actor for over a ten and is affiliated with China ’s Ministry of State Security , an intelligence and security agency responsible for the country ’s extraneous intelligence collection .

U.S. Treasury functionary Adewale O. Adeyemo said in a program line Friday : “ The Treasury Department will continue to use its authorities to hold accountable malicious cyber actors who target the American people , our company , and the United States government , let in those who have point the Treasury Department specifically . ”

Earlier this month , theU.S. government sanctioned another China - based cybersecurity companyover its say link to a government - back up hacking group known as Flax Typhoon . The Treasury state the ship’s company , Integrity Technology Group , had been involved in “ multiple computer usurpation incidents against U.S. victims , ” include U.S. critical infrastructure .
