The Trump administration is carving out big tariff exemption for the technical school manufacture .

While President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he woulddelay many of the grocery - shaking tariffsthat he ’d announced the previous week , he kept a world-wide baseline 10 % tariff in place , while also increase tariffs on Chinese goods to 125 % ( on top of a 20 % tariff that he ’d already imposed on good from China ) .

There ’s been plenty of guess aboutwhat the duty will mean for the tech diligence , which manufactures many consumer electronics in China and elsewhere abroad . One of Trump ’s stated goal is to bring manufacturing back to the United States , but others believethe dream of an American - made iPhone is a fantasy .

Those disputation may be paused after Friday evening , when U.S. Customs and Border Protection posteda inclination of product categoriesthat are “ leave off from the reciprocal duty imposed under Executive Order 14257 , ” with the exclusions backdate to April 5 .

Those class appear to include smartphones , laptops , knockout drive , and machine that make semiconducting material . Those merchandise will all be exempt from both the 125 % tariff on goods from China and from the universal baseline tariff . ( Other duty , such as the previous 20 % duty on Formosan goods , would presumably still apply . )

Notable Silicon Valley figuresled by Elon Muskhave joined the Trump administration , while other tech chief operating officer have been courting Trump , most visibly with millions of dollars donate to his inauguration . Those efforts seemed tobear little fruit — until last night ’s promulgation , which Daniel Ives , spheric headway of technology research at Wedbush Securities , describedas “ a dream scenario for tech investor . ”

technical school giants like Apple and Nvidia are belike celebrating the news , as are U.S. consumers who will avoid a braggy markup on their next iPhone . But the manufacture could still be hit with more targeted duty and other restrictions . For example , The New York Times reports thatthe Trump governance is preparing a national security measure - relate investigationinto semiconductors . And indeed , U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick saidSunday that these products would be included in “ the semiconductor unit duty , which are occur in belike a month or two . ”
