Timo Resch is basking in the sunshine . That ’s literally dead on target , as we speak on a gloriously open California day at the Quail , one of Monterey Car Week ’s most esteemed events . But it ’s figuratively true as well , as Resch , who take the chief executive officer role at Porsche Cars North America ( PCNA ) last November , is in a very good place professionally .
PCNA just had its best fourth ever , with second - fourth part sales up 13 % over the same stop in 2023 . The mark has been showing consistent impulse of previous , and it comes at a critical time , with Porsche crowd electrification in an increasingly hesitant market .
Porsche is about to launch its second EV , anall - electric version of the Macan SUV , the brand ’s most affordable model . This will be followed soon after by anall - galvanic version of the 718 , the trade name ’s most affordable play car . The railcar hail spicy on the dog of a new contemporaries of 911 , available as a hybrid for the first prison term , plus a fresh Panamera , which now produces even more power and range from its revise sparking plug - in hybrid system .
Resch , sitting between a unadulterated - snowy Macan Electric and a shocking majestic Taycan Turbo GT , says this is “ the biggest ware portfolio remap that we have ever done . ” The electrification cause is still there , but it ’s lose some momentum of late . The company had previously be after to be 80 % galvanising by 2030 , but just last calendar month Porsche tapped the brakes andtold Reutersthat end is now “ strung-out on customer demand . ”
Resch is pragmatical about the situation , say the fellowship ’s elemental mission is to simply give its customers what they desire . “ I suppose the market will severalize us , the customers will narrate us . To have alternative and choices available , that ’s what the Porsche make is about , ” he says .
The young , battery - powered Macan will be a test of that theory , as it does n’t replace its home combustion predecessor but rather complements it . “ We have the Macan Electric , and for the foreseeable future , the Macan ICE ( internal combustion engine ) , ” Resch says .
At least initially , the electric and gasoline - powered Macan versions will be useable at the same time . They ’ll sit down side - by - side on franchise floors — each one vying for customers ’ attention .

Resch declines to give any courtly numbers for preorders or hand - raisers for the Macan Electric , but he say stake is trending along regional lines . “ If you look at the mapping , in the United States , there are country where electrification is really up and go . They have good infrastructure . There ’s in high spirits demand . There ’s some other states where it ’s a little turn more slow , ” he says .
The electric Macan is testify up first at Porsche ’s two American Experience Centers , ground in Los Angeles and Atlanta , where interested party can see for themselves if the battery - electric SUV inhabit up to the ballyhoo .
“ Our dealer and the customers are very excited to at long last , at long last see the car , get behind the wheel , and see it , ” Resch says .
Software woes
Resch ’s vehemence on “ eventually ” is due to the rather riotous gestation that the electric Macan suffered on the way to production . A series of software program exploitation problems delayed deployment of the all - galvanising SUV , built on the PPE platform , which will also underpin the upcoming Audi Q6 E - Tron .
Software has been a distributor point of rivalry within the Volkswagen Group ( Porsche ’s parent fellowship ) for years , much of it surrounding the troubledCariad division , which has been plagued with internal delays . Those struggles lead , at least part , to the recent$5 billion investment and joint venture with Rivianthat will give VW accession to the startup ’s software stack .
Porsche has also been mingle its author computer code with Google and Apple . Where General Motors is pushing roving twist integrating to the side , taking more of the user experience in - house and keeping smartphone jut options at branch ’s length , Porsche is shifting toward ever - deeper wandering integrating .
Resch says that Porsche will always modernise its own in - motorcar interfaces — infotainment systems that are easy to use and comprehensive in functionality . “ But at the same time , if customers require to have other choices , we will get them these choices , ” he say .
Turning to Apple and Google
That means succeeding Porsche in - bolt experiences featuring native Android apps while simultaneously allow for an ever - deep integration of Apple CarPlay . Soon , your iPhone will be able to reach its tendril beyond the car ’s central touchscreen , take ascendancy even of the calibre clump behind the wheel .
“ We plainly have a proven , long relationship with Apple . We have a very safe exchange about where the industry is heading . And for that intellect , it ’s skilful to ordinate with them because we know that Apple itself is also very customer - driven , very client - centre , ” Resch says . “ But it does n’t mean that we are locked into anything . ”
Again , Resch says it ’s client requirement that ’s pushing Porsche to influence more closely with the Cupertino - based tech heavyweight . “ We have a rather high parcel of Apple users , ” he says .
Apple , then , is seen as a safe cooperator for the marque , but there is one country where Resch is n’t keen to make alliances : government .
I ask Resch about the more and more politically charged situation around EVs in the U.S. marketplace . It ’s the only clip he intermit from his rapid - fire answers and consider a minute to consider his answer .
In the end , he falls back to his mantra : “ I think we , as a brand , we are well rede to always offer choice , ” he say . “ Really what is need is more option for client with different variation so that they can really pick and choose . That ’s what they ’re used to from the automotive grocery store before . That ’s also what they ’re used to from Porsche . And if you give them the choice , then they will also naturally notice their way . ”
